Ryo Tomo [Ryan Luikens], nacido en el 84, creció en los suburbios, es una artista, ilustrador y diseñador gráfico Estadounidense. Ha vivido en Perú, Japón, México y Egipto, aunque actualmente dice comer pizza y tomar café mientras trabaja por su cuenta en Denver, Colorado.
Ryo Tomo [Ryan Luikens], born in 84 and raised in suburbia, is an American artist, illustrator and graphic designer. He’s lived in Peru, Japan, Mexico and Egypt, but he currently drinks coffee, eats pizza and freelances from Denver, Colorado.

En primer instancia, lo que nos interesó sobre Ryo Tomo fue notar su clara intención de capturar momentos que convierten al espectador en poseedor de una mirada, de una situación espacial dentro de la ilustración. De ahí surgieron las siguientes preguntas.
The thing that we found appealing about Ryo Tomo in first instance, was his clear intention of capturing moments that turn the members of the audience in owner of a sight, an spacial situation, inside the ilustration. This is where the following questions came from.
Guten:Ver : In you Intro you say that you like «slower-than-life moments»… How is that reflected in your illustration work?
Ryo Tomo: With my art I try to capture tiny bits of life. Scenes, exciting and dull. The «moments» that quickly pass by us all in this highly fragmented digital age. Life is fun when fast, but it feels more important when slowed down.
Guten:Ver : En tu presentación dices que te gustan los momentos «lentos como la vida»… ¿Cómo es que esto se refleja en tu trabajo como ilustrador?
Ryo Tomo: Con mi arte intento capturar pequeños momentos de vida. Escenas, emocionantes y aburridas. Los «momentos» que se pasan rápidamente en esta era digital altamente fragmentada. La vida es divertida cuando pasa rápido, pero se siente mucho más importante cuando bajas la velocidad.

G: What would be your definition for «Art» within nowadays context?
RT: Me, you and everyone feels. Good art inspires feeling.. it should make you feel something. Good, great or horrendously awful, art will light something within. If art doesn’t resonate is it really art?
G: ¿Cual sería tu definición de «arte» dentro del contexto actual?
RT: Yo, ustedes, todos sentimos. El buen arte inspira sentimiento… debería hacernos sentir algo. Bueno, genial u horriblemente feo, el arte encenderá algo por dentro. ¿es realmente arte algo que no tiene resonancia?

G: Are all of your drawings integrated with photographs taken by yourself? if so, are they, both photos and illustrations, always interconnected memories?
RT: Though not all photos I use are mine, most are. I’m a photographer with an extensive personal library of inspirado, but when I’m unable to find an image that rightly matches a given mood, I scour flickr’s pool of creative commons. I believe in mashing up. Remix and reappropriate.
In my work, everything is inherently connected, but themes are intentionally vague. While there’s a
always point, there’s also room for interpretation.

G: ¿Todas tus fotos están integradas con fotos hechas por ti? de ser así ¿son ellas, fotografías e ilustraciones, recuerdos interconectadas?
RT: Aunque no todas las fotos que utilizo son mías, si lo son la mayoría. Soy un fotógrafo con un extenso archivo de trabajo propio, pero cuando no encuentro una imagen que concuerde exactamente con el humor, busco en el fondo común de creative commons en flickr. Creo en los mash-ups. Remezclar y reapropiarse.
G: Finally, you’ve lived and worked in many cities around the globe. Can you please share with us (using no more than 2 or 3 words) the most impressive thing you’ve found/seen in each of them?
RT: Love and sadness
G: Finalmente, has vivido y trabajado en muchas ciudades alrededor del mundo. ¿Puedes compartir con nosotros (usando no más de dos palabras) lo más impresionante que has visto/encontrado en ellas?
RT: Amor y tristeza
